The Preliminary SAT or PSAT is one of the most important tests every student preparing to get admission to a college in the US should take. While the test doesn’t directly impact your college application (admission committees look at your SAT score and not PSAT score), you should still take this test. Why?

The Scholarship

PSAT is also known as NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). It is a qualifying test based on which you can get a scholarship for your college education. Your score is automatically sent to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, as well as various other groups for the scholarship.

National Metric Scholarship Corporation offers nearly 10,000 National Merit Scholarships to students based on their PSAT score, academic performance, skills, and accomplishments. So, if a student does well in this test, they stand a chance to have a significant part of their college expense taken care of by the scholarship.

NOTE: Scholarship isn’t available for non-US residents. So, international students can’t get this scholarship.

The Other Benefits

So what if international students don’t qualify for the National Merit Scholarship in the SAT. The scholarship is just one of the several reasons why you should take the PSAT if you want to pursue higher education in the US.

One of the biggest benefits of taking PSAT is that it thoroughly prepares you for SAT, which is incredibly important, especially if you want to get admission to a top university. It will give you a good idea of what to expect from your SAT.

PSAT is a perfect practice step that comes at a pretty affordable price. Its fees are much lower than that of SAT (and some of the SAT mock tests)

PSAT score can be an indicative score of how you will likely perform in your SAT. Subsequently, it can also provide you with insights into how you can prepare better for the SAT through its detailed score report with benchmarking.

With PSAT score, you can also avail College Board’s Search Service, which can get you noticed by several colleges and scholarship boards.

So, there are many benefits of taking PSAT. The importance of PSAT cannot be overstated for international students who dream and plan to study in a top university in the US.
