So, while otherwise some universities asked for a GRE score as a mandatory step, that’s not the case right now. Many universities across the world – like the University of California, Los Angeles – have waived off the test owing to the ongoing events. They are primarily relying on the applicant’s academic history, statement of purpose, letter of recommendation, resume, and past professional experience to consider their admission.
That said, not every university has taken this route. So, whichever school you’re applying to for a master’s degree, check out their website or reach out to them via call and email to get more clarity on whether or not they want a GRE score.
What to do?
- If the university has waived off GRE: You don’t need to submit this score. It’s not mandatory. But if you can take this test safely, you should still take it and submit the score anyway. A good GRE score can add weight to your profile.
- If the university has not waived off GRE: You’ll have to take the test. In case, however, you can’t for different reasons (like COVID-19-related restrictions), you can write a letter to the university explaining your situation and requesting a GRE waive. Many of them would consider this request.
