The test is designed to assess scientific skills important for success in college, such as reading, writing, and math.

The majority of colleges in the US use this test as part of their admissions process because the score can be a great reflection of what students have learned in school. Some colleges may have a minimum requirement as eligibility criteria. For example, many schools require that you have a 22 on the English portion of the exam in order to be considered for admission.

ACT Sections: ACT Exam Pattern 2022

The ACT has four sections: English, math, reading, and science reasoning.

ACT English Section

The English section measures your ability to write a good essay and analyze readings in context. It also assesses your grammar and vocabulary usage skills. You have 45 minutes to complete three writing prompts and one 30-minute reading passage on the ACT English section.

ACT Math Section

The ACT math section is designed to measure your ability to solve problems in various problem-solving situations by applying basic concepts from algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and data analysis. You will be given 60 minutes to complete 40 multiple-choice questions in this section alone!

ACT Reading Section

The ACT Reading section consists of around 40 multiple choice questions that cover three types of passages: literary fiction, social studies/humanities, and natural sciences/technology. The passages are several paragraphs long, but they’re not as long as those found on the SAT. You’re given 35 minutes to answer all of these questions.

ACT Science Reasoning Section

The science reasoning section tests your understanding of scientific concepts in biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics. You’ll need to read short passages about these topics and answer multiple-choice questions about them within 30 minutes. The passages can be anywhere from one paragraph to two pages long, depending on the topic being tested.

ACT Exam Score

Your composite score is calculated by taking the average of your English, mathematics, reading, and science scores. It is reported on a scale of 1 to 36, with a higher score reflecting a stronger set of skills.

ACT Exam Fees

ACT fees are $63 (without writing), or $88 (with writing). The cost of additional materials like late registration fees or rescheduling your test date is not included in this amount.
